the art of slinging paint…

…is something I am enjoying learning.  Considering that I am only using rattle cans I have still learnt a significant amount to get what the average person would agree is a reasonable finish.

It’s  not all been plain sailing as I have learnt that there are great variations in the quality of paint.  I will only use Bike Colours as they have been consistently brilliant where other more well known bike paints have failed miserably.

There has been quite a bit of repair work required on the other panels.  So I have once again broken out the amazing Plastex Repair Kit which has been incredible.  It can be used to fill holes, which is what I have predominately done on these panels, or made up in a mould to form a new piece of plastic which I used on my Moto Guzzi.  I cannot express how amazing this stuff is.

20170501_140623 It’s as simple as pouring powder and adding the liquid to fill holes or into a mould.  I also used a dremel to cut thin strips of ABS plastic to ‘stitch’ across splits to add a bit more strength and then used the soldering iron to meld the plastic across the split together.  Not sure who the repairs will stand up to jolts and bumps on the bike…that remains to be seen.

Also got some HEL braided brake hoses and clutch hose which I decided to go with OEM black rather than a transparent cover.

I still have a side fairing and upper fairing to paint and then that’s the bodywork done other than the decals.  Still need to fire it up at some point but that will be a task for an electrics wizard.

  1. I’ve been enjoying watching this project come together. Great work tackling so much of it yourself.

Awesome Job. I own an old zxr myself and they’re IMO one of the nicest looking sports bikes ever built.

  2. I was looking into painting myself a little while back. There’s some good youtube clips available in relation to cutting and polishing which I think will help bring your paint work out to a nice finish.

View this guy’s clips on youtube, he’s very passionate about his work and does it all at home….I had a compressor given to me a few months ago. Next project I’m going to do it.

Your masking work looks good. Your zxr looks like new!! How can you ride it now!!
